District Champs! Tiger Golf Wins Title for Second Straight Year

“Hey hey! We got another district championship!”

Those were the words of boys’ golf coach Dan McDonald after the Tigers claimed their second consecutive District 2-6A title last week. The team posted a two-day team winning score of 591 at Texas Tech’s Rawls Golf Course to claim the hardware.

FHS shot 293 during Monday’s first round as Brian Boles (69) and Jayce Hargrove (71) led the way with a combined four under par total. Logan Vargas and Kade Smith added scores of 74 and a 79, respectively, and the Tigers claimed a six-shot margin over second place Odessa Permian and a nine-shot lead over Amarillo Tascosa after day one.

Tuesday’s final round was hampered with strong winds and cool temperatures, and the Tigers struggled on the front nine. As the lead slipped to two shots, FHS fought back on the back nine. Hargrove, Vargas and Leyton Lee played solid, steady golf the last nine holes to help the Tigers win championship.

A final round team score of 298 and two-day total of 591 bested Permian by 14 shots (605). Tascosa finished third with a score of 609.

The Frenship junior varsity team placed fifth overall as they recorded scores a total of 685 (334-351).

Individually, Jayce Hargrove tied for first place honors with a score of 143 (71-72). The Tigers had four players make the All District Team after placing in the top 10 – Hargrove, Boles (fourth place), Vargas (fifth) and Lee (ninth).

Frenship will now compete in the Class 6A Region I Tournament set for April 24-25 at the Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
