CVA Program at Frenship High School in need of Public Partners

Frenship High School recently started a Veterinary Medical Applications course. Within the framework of the course, students can apply to take the Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Level 1 Exam and obtain their state certification.

  • Students complete 200 classroom training hours with a high school instructor.
  • Students perform and complete 78 skills from the state validation checklist.
  • Students take and pass a 100-question certification exam.
  • Students complete 300 hours of hands-on training under the direction of a DVM or Texas LVT.

All skills and hours must be verified by a DVM or Texas LVT no later than the last day of school. Hours in a clinic can be paid or non-paid. No minimum or maximum number of hours per week are required. Hours must include supervised hands-on interaction with live animals. Job shadowing hours do not count for certification.

In order to participate in this program, students must make a signed commitment to their high school instructor and be appropriately screened for professionalism and work ethic before being referred to a vet clinic. Frenship ISD is currently seeking community partners willing to guide and supervise select students. Hours would be completed before or after school, or during weekends and holidays based on employer needs.
