Planting Seeds for Success at Legacy Elementary

Legacy Elementary second graders are quite literally starting from the ground up in science class. Tying into lessons on the plant cycle and water cycle, students visited the Legacy garden and started the life cycle of various vegetables.

"We planted radishes, lettuce, carrots, spinach and cabbage seeds," said science teachers Mrs. Peggram and Mrs. Martin. "The students are responsible for watering, weeding and planting the seeds."

The time in the garden ties into a plant's needs, the water cycle and types of matter. It also ties into the parts of a plant.

Students are able to use all five basic senses: see, touch, hear, smell and taste.

"The students try all of the food," said Mrs. Martin. "Some parents even take some of the onions, radishes and spinach home."

Students check on the garden’s progress weekly and keep track of the vegetable's progress by sketching what they see each week in their journals.
