Westwind Learns Value of Community Helpers

By Angela Howard

Kindergarten students have been spending time this week learning all about community helpers. One day, the Lubbock Police Officers came to discuss how they serve our community by protecting these students and their families. They also brought their police dogs and taught students how the dogs protect people as well.

When asked about the dogs, students said:

  • “The dogs cost $10,000 each and they have a better bulletproof vest than the police officers do.”
  • “Police dogs go home with the people but can’t come in the house and snuggle.”
  • “If a bad guy comes in your house and will not get out, the dogs will go in and get them for you.”
  • “The dogs spin if the man says spin.”
  • “They have a special toy for the dog.”

When you grow up, how would you like to serve other people? Students were to think about that and dress up like a community helper they might want to be when they grow up. There were many police officers and firefighters, but also doctors, chefs, teachers, a crossing guard, a lifeguard, a scientist who will discover many things, and even a Gene Messer Car Salesman who will serve people by finding the best car for them.
