Frenship Foundation Provides Motivational Enhancement Tool for Fourth-Grade Classroom

Mrs. Rundell could not wait to use the iPad Pro for a multitude of academic needs in her classroom, especially during her Guided Math Lessons. During Guided Math, students work in different groups based on their academic needs at the time. Mrs. Rundell allows these groups to work independently while she monitors each group and does some immediate reteaching as needed.

Mrs. Rundell at WW1. Basic Facts – This is where students work on multiplication facts, a 100 chart and flashcards.

2. Problem Solving – This is where students use an iPad and different apps to show the teacher what they know about the steps and methods used in solving word problems. They show the expression, the method, the number sentence, and how they solved the problem.

3. Skills – This is where students use the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to watch Khan Academy math videos and work out math problems. Students record themselves working out problems, re-watch their work, review their work and learn from their own mistakes as they rework the problem and collaborate with their peers. Students also use the iPad Pro to learn from other educational apps. When students have completed the tasks, Mrs. Rundell visits these centers with her math lesson. Students say they feel more confident and more prepared for Mrs. Rundell’s lesson because they feel like they now have prior knowledge. They are much more likely to participate in the lesson and answer questions because of that confidence and knowledge.

4. Fastt Math – This is where students practice multiplication facts using an online program.
Mrs. Rundell also provides this group with a mini-lesson. Students will use the iPad Pro to show their work, explain how they solved problems and more. She uses this as an opportunity for assessment as well by taking screenshots of their work.

Students at WWMrs. Rundell teaches some students in the class how to become technology experts. These students teach other students how to use the iPads and programs and help troubleshoot when technology issues come up.

Mrs. Rundell also uses the iPad Pro for Math and Science lessons including using the Nearpod app, which includes virtual field trips, along with many other educational apps. She is constantly coming up with new innovative ways to use this and many other technology tools to enrich the lessons and motivate students.
