FHS Student Council sponsor Courtney Ferguson said the group consists of over sixty student volunteers that work together to provide a means for student expression, assist in school affairs and activities, encourage student, faculty and community relations, and give students opportunities to gain leadership experience.
Ferguson said that the FHS student council is always searching for needs around the school and community, and then they fill those needs.
“We love to promote school spirit by participating in every pep rally, and to promote kindness by sponsoring several kindness weeks every year,” Ferguson said. “We love raising money and volunteering in the community.”
Ferguson said any student can join the Student Council by simply attending a meeting and deciding which committee they want to be part of. She said the five different committees are the Energy Committee, Community Service Committee, the Pride and Patriotism Committee, the Drugs and Alcohol Safety and Health Awareness Committee, and the Fundraising Committee.
Energy Committee
“The Energy Committee is in charge of community beautification and recycling,” Ferguson said. “This committee recycles water bottles, sponsors an energy saving week at FHS, picks up trash at our Adopt a Highway site, celebrates Earth day, and incorporates saving energy into all our projects when they can.”
Ferguson said that right now the Energy Committee is preparing to have students participate in "A Week of Thanks” the week of November 16 through 20. She said that every student will get a feather to write something they are thankful for on and add to a huge turkey to display these thoughts.
Community Service Committee
“The Community Service Committees’ prime purpose is to find ways to volunteer in our community,” Ferguson said. “They usually make gingerbread houses at Christmas with the Boys and Girls Club, volunteer in the Lubbock Impact clothing closet, participate in the Walk for Diabetes, walk for MDA and walk for St. Jude’s.”
Ferguson said that right now the Community Service Committee is working on writing letters to veterans for Veteran's Day to drop off at the Lubbock VA Outpatient Clinic on November 6. She said they are also working on a surprise for the pep rally on Friday.
Pride and Patriotism Committee
“The Pride and Patriotism Committee promotes just that – pride and patriotism,” Ferguson said. “We try to come up with games or activities to get clubs involved at pep rallies. This committee is in charge or Homecoming dress up days, the Homecoming dance, and any Spirit Days, such as holiday dress up days, throughout the year. They also host a senior sunrise and senior sunset event on the first and last day of the school year at People’s Bank Stadium.”
Ferguson said that this week the Pride and Patriotism Committee is hosting a mock election. She said items on the ballot include United State President, one change you would make to the dress code and the best social media app.
Drug and Alcohol Safety and Health Awareness Committee
“This committee is committed to spreading awareness on all topics that full under drugs, alcohol, safety and health,” Ferguson said. “We are currently sponsoring Red Ribbon week at FHS where students sign a commitment to be drug free, make themselves red ribbons, wear red, and are challenged to research the history of the event. We hosted a wear green event in support of mental wellness at one of the pep rallies, and were the committee that helped put on the Shattered Dreams program two years ago. This committee has been focusing on the dangers of vaping in recent years.”
Fundraising Committee
“This committee is dedicated to raising money for those in need,” Ferguson said. “Their biggest project is the Children’s Miracle Network Penny Drive where one-hundred percent of the proceeds go to the University Medical Center NICU. It is a week-long event in January that gets the entire school involved.”
Ferguson said that this committee has also raised money to feed Frenship students over the Thanksgiving holiday, hosted teacher appreciation weeks, and put on a Mr. Frenship scholarship pageant.
“I think students leave us understanding the importance of commitment and follow through,” Ferguson said. “I think they understand the hard work it takes to make an event successful and how important it is to plan and stay organized. They learn to listen to others and celebrate individual talents to make our team better as a whole.”
