Frenship High School Marching Band Excels at Regional Marching Contest

The Big and Bold, Blue and Gold - Pride of Frenship High School marching band competed in the Region 16 UIL marching contest last Saturday, October 24. All three judges on the panel gave them Division 1 ratings, the 30th consecutive time for the program.

Dr. Ryan Smith, FHS Director of Band, said that their performance on Friday evening at the Homecoming football game was a great run through for the band. He said the band performed “Carry On My Wayward Son,” by Kansas, “Carry On,” by Fun, and “Survivor,” by Destiney’s Child.

“Last Friday night was only the third time we have performed this show for someone,” Dr. Smith said. “Because of the late football season start, performing for a crowd is still something really new for us. The Homecoming crowd was a great opportunity for us to practice our performance attitude.”

Dr. Smith said that on Saturday his students were in the zone and ready to compete.

“The students Saturday not only played and marched well – but they really PERFORMED,” Dr. Smith said. “It was fun to see their engagement and focus during the warm-up all the way through the actual performance. The most impactful moment was definitely the big hit at the end of ‘I’m a Survivor.’ The crowd loved it and the judges all commented on how fun that moment was.”

Dr. Smith said that his students will perform their award-winning show again at the home football game on November 6th. He said that after that students will focus on their individual competitions for the TMEA All-Region band competitions.
