Frenship Boys and Girls Basketball Continue District Grind

Boys Basketball

The Frenship Boys Basketball team took on Midland High last Friday night in Midland, securing their fourth win in District 2-6A to remain undefeated.

The Tigers took over early on and ran up the score to 29-15 at the half. After returning the Tigers tacked on another 26 points to claim the victory 55-32. Impressive double-digit scorers included Tracy Godfrey who had 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, and T.J. Miller, who had  11 points and six assists on the night.

Flash forward to Tuesday evening, the Tigers were back in action against a tough San Angelo Central team, who had the home court advantage.

The score remained close for the game's entirety but the Tigers pulled out the win 49-39 for their fifth District 2-6A victory. Three Tigers pulled out double-digit score; Tracey Godfrey with a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, T.J. Miller with 14 points, and Jalen Braziel with 10.

Frenship Head Boys Basketball Coach Paul Page said he has been thrilled to see his athletes perform so well.

"It was huge for us to travel to San Angelo and get big district win against a very good Central team," Page said. "Our players had to be tough in a very hostile environment to come away with a 49-39 victory to move to first place in District."

The Tigers (5-0, 23-2) will face Odessa Permian on Friday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tiger Pit. Frenship.TV and Chois Woodman will have it live for you HERE and on Double T 97.3.

Girls Basketball

Last Friday night the Tigers traveled to Midland High to face off against the Lady Dawgs. The Tigers opened the game with a bang, charging ahead by 16 in the first quarter, and ending the first half 35-10.

Frenship Head Girls Basketball Coach Trent Hilliard said his team was able to out-execute the Lady Dawgs, never giving them a chance to bounce back.

"Abbi Holder had 11 assists in the game, making it the 2nd greatest single game assist total in Frenship Girls basketball history, tying Frenship 2020 grad Maci Maddox," Hilliard said.

The Tigers ended up with the win against Midland, 63-30.

On Tuesday, January 18, Frenship headed to San Angelo to take on the San Angelo Central Lady Bobcats. From start to finish, the Tigers and Lady Cats battled for the victory, which did not come easy for Frenship. After being outscored in first quarter, 14-10, the Tigers turned the tide to finish the first half on top 23-20.

Frenship Sophomore Abby Boyce had a double-double with 12-points and 12-rebounds, and Junior Hannah Harmon hit a clutch three-point shot with under two minutes left to tie the game at 36. The Tigers finished the nail-biter winning by just four, 40-36.

"We like the pressure of being every other team's main target," Hilliard said. "We know we are going to get their best shot and it keeps us mentally and physically ready for the next battle. We currently have a 29-home game district win streak going as well, dating back to February 2016. Other teams and other players have established a legacy of success, this team understands that it is up to them to continue and build on that legacy."

Hilliard said a win over Odessa Permian on Friday evening will guarantee a playoff spot for Frenship.

"That win will qualify us for the playoffs for the 20th consecutive year," Hilliard said. "Coach Terry Lowery started the run for 12 years, and we have been fortunate to continue it during the last eight."

Watch the Tigers (7-0, 21-5) defend the Pit live with Frenship.TV on Friday, January 21 at 6:00 p.m. HERE. Chois Woodman will call the game via the live stream and Double T 97.3.
