September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, which honors the contributions and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Students at Westwind Elementary spent the month learning about Hispanic Heritage and wrapped up their lessons with a fiesta on National Multicultural Diversity Day.  

Students were encouraged to dress up in honor of Hispanic Heritage and had the chance to participate in a variety of grade-level appropriate activities.

Throughout the month, students created artwork in the front hall featuring historical figures of Hispanic origin, which they completed as a part of the celebration. They also played a Hispanic Heritage Trivia game to review what they had been learning about Hispanic Heritage.

During their P.E. classes, students played games like Pass the Sombrero while listening to Hispanic Music. Kindergarten and first-grade students got to hit piñatas and enjoy the candy that fell out of them once they broke apart. Students also had the opportunity to sample authentic Hispanic foods like Mexican corn, galletas, and pan dulce.

Overall, it was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about Hispanic Heritage through the interactive experiences organized by the Westwind staff.
