Boys Soccer Competes in West Texas A&M Showcase

The Boys Soccer team kicked off their season with a win over the Coronado Mustangs on December 29. The final score was 10-0. Head Boys Soccer Coach, Scott Smith, is pleased with how the Tigers showed up.

“It was a good opportunity to try out some specific set-plays that we're experimenting with, and overall, it was a good opportunity to see the full roster play as we welcomed-back a few from injury, especially our SR captain, Cooper Scott,” said Coach Smith.

Goal scorers include Jeremiah Adams, Kellen Martin, Cooper Scott (2), Samuel Miller, Mikah Saldana, Peter De La Torre, Braden Anderson (2), and Drew Cox.

To get the new year started on the right foot, the Tigers traveled to Rockwall to compete in the Jacket Cup Tournament at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium. The Boys faced JJ Pearce, Braswell, and Kimball High School.

In the first game against JJ Pearce, the Tigers fell short with a final score of 2-4. Coach Smith says that the Tigers represented Frenship well even through tough circumstances.

"I was thrilled with the team's performance levels and numbers,” said Coach Smith. “The reality is that we traveled over 7 hours, while the opponent traveled 45 minutes. That will obviously affect the physical and mental aspect of any sport. Could we have been a bit sharper? Yes. But I know my team, and know they represented very well under the travel-tournament circumstances."

In game two against Braswell High School the Tigers lost 1-0. Even through two back-to-back losses in the tournament, Coach Smith couldn’t be more pleased with the boy's performance.

"This was a little tougher to take. Ryan Pharies, Cooper Scott, Arath Villarreal, Jeremiah Adams, our SR group of leaders got after this game in such a pleasing way,” said Coach Smith. “Ultimately, we had 8 clear-cut chances to score and didn't convert those chances into scoreboard points - it was as simple as that. Our performance levels were so high – I, as their coach, could not be any happier with their rigor, grit, determination, work ethic, energy, etc. We all felt disappointed in the scoreboard, but absolutely not in the performance.”

In the final game of the Jacket Cup Tournament, the Tigers played Kimball High School, securing their first win, 4-0.

"We got our 'finishing cleats' on in this game. Our boys, again, performed exactly the same way as the previous games. This time, more clinical with finishing their chances and, ultimately, dominated from first whistle to last,” said Coach Smith.

Coach Smith is looking forward to the rest of the season and watching what the boys can accomplish. He is especially proud of one senior for making the tournament's first-team during the three-day Jacket Cup.

“Overall, great trip with a great group of young men that help make our program a welcoming and pleasing environment to work in! Special shoutout to Arath Villarreall for making All-Tournament First-Team, for his performances across all three days.”

The Boys Soccer Team is currently competing in the West Texas A&M Showcase. On January 11, the Tigers secured two wins defeating the Dumas Demons, 10-1 and the Perryton Rangers 3-0. The Tigers play Palo Duro High School on January 12, and Amarillo High on January 13.
