The Visual Arts Scholastic Event, or VASE, is a prestigious statewide art competition sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association. Frenship High School art students worked diligently throughout the year to design, create, and submit original works for the contest.
The selection process for state VASE is highly competitive. Before advancing, students must submit preliminary sketches and detailed reflections on their creative process, research, and learning to demonstrate both originality and artistic depth.
This year, nine talented Frenship artists advanced to the state-level VASE competition, held last weekend in San Marcos. Out of 2,358 entries from across Texas, four Frenship students earned a coveted Rating IV and proudly brought home state medals for their exceptional artwork.
Joey MacLean, the Frenship High School Visual Arts Coordinator, praised the students’ accomplishments and highlighted the strength of the district’s overall art program.
“I am extremely proud of all the students who participated,” said MacLean. “Four separate art teachers had a student who earned a medal. This speaks to the visual arts program as a whole and represents the great job that the middle school and high school art teachers do to prepare students for success.”
Each student earned their award with a unique piece of original artwork in a different medium. Madelynn Van Hoose received recognition for her etching, Sarah Locke for her painting, Penina Ngendahayo for a ceramic teapot, and Brianna Hart for a mixed media drawing.
MacLean explained that VASE is an incredible opportunity for young artists because it requires them to interview with individual judges and discuss the processes and meanings behind their work. This reflective experience strengthens their connection to their art and deepens their understanding. Additionally, the in-person interaction provides the artist with constructive feedback, helping them grow both artistically and personally.
Congratulations, Frenship Artists!
