Frenship Girls and Boys Basketball Remain Undefeated in District Play

Girls Basketball

The Tigers took on a gritty Odessa High team on Tuesday, but were able to lean on fundamentals to pull out the win 64-60.

Early on an aggressive Odessa defense wrangled the Tigers into 10 turnovers in the first 18 minutes of the game, shaking Frenship's confidence and stamina. Frenship's Chandler Wilson banked a three-pointer at to seal the first quarter lead 17-10 Tigers, however the momentum wouldn't continue as Frenship missed seven of 10 shots from the floor in the second quarter, allowing the Bronchos to sneak past them with a 24-23 lead at the half.

In the third Frenship's Andie Caddel kicked off a Tiger scoring streak with a clutch three-pointer off an assist from Abbi Holder, one of her stunning seven assists of the night. This is just what the Tigers needed to get back into the game, scoring 20 points in less than five minutes.

Dynamic duo Abby Boyce and Addison McClure teamed up for 10 more points, pushing the Tigers to a much needed lead at the end of the third, 46-41.

The Tigers were up for the challenge of the fourth quarter with Addison McClure banking two free throws and a 2-point bucket to help the Tigers gain more ground. The Tigers never let up to grind past the Bronchos 64-60.

"Odessa High played a great game," said Frenship Girls Head Basketball Coach Trent Hilliard. "Every time we felt like we could stretch out our lead, they would hit a big shot to pull them right back into it. Our kids did a great job of being poised and showing confidence down the stretch as they hit 12-14 free throws in the fourth quarter."

Hilliard said the bye week last Friday was perfect and allowed his team to adjust after losing a key player to an injury.

"Coming off of the Caprock Tournament and learning to adjust our positioning was crucial after losing our starting point guard, Elena Noyola, to a season-injury," Hilliard said. "We needed the time to refocus and get some additional practice time in with our new lineups."

Hilliard said his team is ready to re-set and face off against a good Midland High team.

"Midland High is always very athletic," Hilliard said. "We had to hit a last-second shot last year to send it to overtime and we expect the same battle this year."

The Frenship Girls Basketball team will be back on the court on Friday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. against Midland High in Midland.

Boys Basketball

The Frenship Boys Basketball team rolled over Odessa High last Tuesday night defeating the Bronchos 77-47 to remain perfect in District 2-6A play.

Frenship Boys Head Basketball Coach Paul Page said he and his team were excited to meet Odessa High again after beating them in the semifinals round of the coveted Caprock Tournament.

"It was a tough first quarter but we were able to attack their zone really well in the second quarter and outscored them 31-10 to take a 43-22 halftime lead," Page said.

Tajavis Miller led the Tigers with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, while Tate Beeles had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Tracy Godfrey ended the night with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Brining the Tigers to 3-0 in District 2-6A.

The Tigers will be back on the court on Friday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m. against Midland High in Midland.

"Midland High will be a very dangerous team as they are sitting at 0-4 with their backs against the wall and need a victory to stay in the playoff picture," Page said. "They will play very hard and aggressive and shoot the ball pretty well. We look forward to the challenge of playing a significant district game on the road."
