Michelle Discavage, an English teacher at Frenship High School, was recently recognized as the November Mrs. Baird’s High School Teacher on the Rise. The Mrs. Baird's Teachers on the Rise award is a monthly recognition program in the Lubbock area where students nominate teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom. Each month, one teacher is selected from elementary, middle, and high schools.

Discavage was nominated by FHS junior Zoey Beckham, who highlighted her teacher’s ability to foster confidence and growth in her students.

“Mrs. Discavage is known for being a hard teacher with high expectations, but that's exactly what makes her so amazing. She challenges us to reach our full potential, even when we doubt ourselves. At first, her class can feel tough - but that's because she believes in us more than we believe in ourselves,” said Beckham.

Being named a Mrs. Baird’s Teacher on the Rise recipient is particularly meaningful to Discavage because it is based on a student nomination.

“Teaching is hard, and many days I question if I am not only teaching material appropriately for students, but if I am helping them prepare for life outside of high school. My main goal is to see them succeed as independent adults who contribute to society. Being able to watch students grow, learn, and begin believing in their own abilities is what makes teaching enjoyable. When students understand lessons are about more than just English, I feel like I have succeeded and done my job well,” she said.

Beckham enjoys being in Discavage’s class because she strives for her students to improve and reach their full potential, both academically and personally.

“Every essay, every discussion, every assignment pushes us to think deeper and work harder. And when we finally meet those goals, it feels incredible,” said Beckham. “She doesn't just teach English; she teaches confidence, responsibility, and how to be proud of what we create. Mrs. Discavage has a special way of bringing out the best in everyone. She sees something in her students that we sometimes can't see yet, and she helps us find it. Because of her, I've grown so much - not just as a writer, but as a person.”

Discavage feels honored to be nominated by Beckham and appreciates the opportunity to watch her growth as a student.

“Zoey is a student in one of my few smaller classes. She balances being a cheerleader, a student, and having a part-time job. Zoey adds fun to the classroom, and I have watched her become more confident in herself over the last few months. I have had many conversations with her and her classmates about being okay with trying and failing because that's where growth and confidence happen best. I don't think she realizes how much her bubbly personality and good-natured disposition brightens my day,” Discavage said.

Wrapping up her nomination, Beckham highlighted why Discavage stands out as a teacher.

“Her class isn't easy, but it's one of those classes you'll always remember, because she makes you realize how capable you really are. That's why I believe Mrs.Discavage deserves this award more than anyone. She doesn't just prepare us for tests - she prepares us for life,” said Beckham.

Beckham’s praise reflects the passion and dedication that have guided Discavage throughout her career, a path shaped by her family’s long-standing involvement in education.

“There was a time I was adamant about not going into education, or as I called it, 'the family business.' When I understood my purpose is to encourage and equip others, teaching seemed to be the best fit. Additionally, teaching incorporates every job I have had in one: public speaking, life coaching, and training. I also find my students to be absolutely hilarious,” said Discavage.

Discavage also highlighted her favorite part about being in the Frenship Family: the people.

“The people are my favorite part of being in Frenship. I have received more support from the FHS administrators than I ever have. The English team is filled with some of the best, most enjoyable people on the planet, which makes every day enjoyable. Honestly, I have never enjoyed teaching as much as I have while at FHS, and it's because of the people. On both my best days and my worst days, there is someone encouraging me or asking how they can help,” said Discavage.

Discavage shared her heartfelt appreciation for the recognition, reflecting on what it means to be acknowledged by her students, colleagues, and the community.

“It's truly an honor to be recognized. Any teacher will tell you how much a simple 'thank you' or 'I see the work you are doing' means. In a world that often criticizes public education, I love that awards like this exist to showcase the many positives happening day in and day out, the things social media and the news do not report. I cannot thank the FHS administrative team, the FHS staff, and Zoey enough; it's an honor to be recognized. And thank you: Mrs. Baird's, United Supermarkets, and Texas Tech for the incredible gifts!”

As a part of the recognition, Discavage received a $100 gift card from United Supermarkets, a basket of goodies from Mrs. Baird's, and a meal for two at The Texas Tech Club. As a part of nominating a teacher, Beckham also won a $50 American Express gift card from Mrs. Baird’s. Discavage will be honored at the Teacher on the Rise celebration at the end of the school year.
