Frenship ISD Students Compete in Regional Academic Decathlon Competition

Frenship ISD Academic Decathlon teams from Memorial High School and Frenship High School recently competed in the regional Academic Decathlon competition, showcasing academic excellence, perseverance, and teamwork against some of the strongest programs in the state.

Memorial High School competed in the Small School Division of Region 1, facing exceptionally tough competition. Six teams from the region are ranked in the top 15 statewide. Memorial placed 5th overall at regionals and will advance to the state competition, ranked 10th in the state.

This achievement marks a historic milestone for Memorial High School. It is the first time every team member has competed in Academic Decathlon, and the entire team advanced to state. Even more impressive, the team is made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores, while most competing teams consist primarily of juniors and seniors.

Several Memorial students also earned individual medals at the regional competition:

  • Aiden Harrison – 3rd Place, Essay
  • Mason Mikel – 3rd Place, Music
  • Addie Wagner – 3rd Place, Literature; 3rd Place, Essay
  • Hamish Hackworth – 3rd Place, Science
  • John Glover – 3rd Place, Essay

“These students and my assistant coach Bridget Mann have all worked incredibly hard to set a solid foundation this year and for many years of Academic Decathlon to come,” said Memorial Academic Decathlon Coach, Cathryn Wright. “This is only the beginning. I am so proud of them.”

The Memorial Panthers will compete in the State competition February 26 through March 1 in Corpus Christi.

Frenship High School also delivered an impressive showing at the regional meet, placing 2nd overall as a team in medium/large school division. While the team will not advance to the state competition, their dedication and growth throughout the season were evident, as they narrowly missed qualification.
