For more than two decades, the Frenship Foundation for Leadership has invested in Frenship students by recognizing the qualities that go beyond grades and test scores. Since 2004, the Foundation has proudly awarded Frenship High School and Reese Education Center students with Character Scholarships totaling more than $1 million, honoring students who exemplify exceptional character, leadership, and service to others.
One of those students is Kianah Aldaco, a Frenship High School 2025 graduate and current student at Texas Tech University, who was selected as a recipient of the Frenship Foundation Character Scholarship.
Aldaco is currently pursuing a degree in Animal Science and says her career goals have been rooted in her passion for serving others since childhood.
“I am currently majoring in Animal Science at Texas Tech. From a young age, I have always felt called to become a veterinarian and to serve others. I wanted to help in a way that was personal and meaningful, where compassion and care truly matter. This path allows me to make a difference in the lives of both people and animals, and it feels deeply connected to who I am,” said Aldaco.
Now in her first year at Texas Tech, Aldaco has already become involved in multiple campus organizations and continues to seek opportunities to lead and serve.
“I am a member of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, I am a membership candidate for Kappa Kappa Psi, I am a member of the Women’s Service Organization. I am also a member of the Country Swing program,” said Aldaco.
As a Character Scholarship recipient, Aldaco said the support has been meaningful far beyond financial assistance.
“Being a recipient of the Frenship Foundation Character Scholarship means more to me than I can fully express. It makes me feel seen, supported, and deeply valued. It reminds me that my character, my effort, and my heart for serving others matter, and that there are people who genuinely believe in my future,” said Aldaco.
Aldaco shared that the scholarship has allowed her to focus on her goals and her college experience without the constant worry of financial stress.
“This scholarship lifted a tremendous weight off my shoulders. One of my biggest goals is to graduate without the burden of student debt, and this support has brought me closer to that goal. Because of this scholarship, I am able to focus on my education and personal growth without constant financial stress. It has given me peace of mind and the freedom to invest fully in my future,” said Aldaco.
While adjusting to college life, Aldaco said the lessons and experiences she gained at Frenship helped prepare her for the challenges of higher education, especially the community she found through the band program.
“Being part of the band community at Frenship shaped me in ways I will carry for the rest of my life. Band taught me what it means to belong to a family, one where you are allowed to struggle, fail, and grow, knowing someone will always be there to lift you back up. Through band, I learned perseverance, discipline, time management, and how to serve others with humility. More than anything, band showed me that there is so much life to live and so much meaning to be found in shared experiences,” said Aldaco.
The Frenship Foundation Character Scholarship is made possible through community donations and annual fundraising efforts, including The Drive for Leaders, a golf tournament established in 2004 as a major fundraiser for the student scholarship program. Each year, Character Scholarship recipients are recognized in front of donors during the annual tournament.
“The impact they are making reaches far beyond financial support. They are easing an enormous burden for students like me and showing us that we are not alone in our journey. Their generosity communicates love, encouragement, and belief, allowing students to move forward with confidence, hope, and purpose,” said Aldaco.
As the Frenship Foundation begins preparing for the next round of Character Scholarship recipients, Aldaco encourages current Frenship seniors to take the time to apply and share their story.
“Take the time to apply and tell your story. This scholarship is not just about funding; it is about people who truly care about you, your character, and your future. You are worthy of support, and this opportunity has the power to change your life in ways you may not yet realize. Your character and leadership matters,” said Aldaco.
