The Frenship High School Varsity Colorguard team made history this season, earning second place at the North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA) State Championships at Coppell High School. While the program has celebrated success in the past, this marks the first medal for Frenship since NTCA adopted the prelims/finals format.
After finishing fifth out of 16 Scholastic AA teams in prelims, the Varsity Blue team delivered a near-perfect finals performance with zero drops, moving up to second place. Their finals score also reflected a substantial improvement, increasing from 66.08 at a contest three weeks earlier to 76.00.
Amanda Knight, Frenship High School Fine Arts Manager and Colorguard Director, expressed pride in her team’s perseverance and determination.
“It means so much to me to be the first team to medal in the new prelims/finals format,” said Knight. “These students absolutely did not give up. I’m proud of this program, and I’m glad the community can now see the incredible kids involved.”
The team’s success was the result of meticulous preparation and teamwork. Leading up to the championships, the squad focused on synchronizing flag placement, body alignment, free-hand movements, and transitions to ensure that 11 students performed as one cohesive unit.
“The transition from fifth in prelims to second in finals was a wild ride,” said Knight. “The students knew they would have to perform better individually while fully trusting their teammates to do the same. That level of teamwork and energy is rare, and they were phenomenal.”
Competition within NTCA is among the most competitive in the state, drawing top programs from across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
“To hold our own and finish second was surreal. We’re now recognized among the top programs in the circuit, and our students’ hard work and sacrifice are finally being seen on a big stage,” said Knight.
The season reflects not only the team’s technical skills but also their growth, resilience, and dedication to each other. Their success has solidified Frenship Colorguard’s reputation in the state and serves as an inspiration for future teams.
“This is what I do it for—to give students a place where they can feel successful, confident, and maybe just a little bit famous," said Knight. "Seeing them achieve this is incredibly rewarding."
Congratulations, Frenship High School Colorguard!
