This past weekend, the Frenship High School Esports teams traveled to Waco to compete in the Texas Undisputed Esports State Championship at Baylor University. The tournament featured a pool-play format followed by elimination rounds, similar to the structure of the Esports World Cup, with teams competing against a wide range of opponents from across Texas.
Frenship High School Esports Coach Keith Gentry explained that the event capped off an intense and successful season for Frenship competitors. Teams qualified for the state championship through strong performances in seasonal playoffs and regional events, including the Hub City Tournament in Lubbock.
Frenship’s Overwatch Blue and Overwatch Gold teams both earned their spots by placing highly in the Season 1 and Season 2 playoffs, while the Rocket League team qualified during the Season 1 playoffs and ranked as high as third in the state throughout the year. Aaron Elizondo, FHS senior, advanced as an individual to state competition in Super Smash Bros. 1v1 after qualifying at the Hub City Tournament, where the Overwatch Blue team also secured an additional state spot with a tournament victory.
All Frenship teams advanced beyond pool play and into the next round of competition. Each group narrowly missed advancing to the final day, falling just one or two placements short in a highly competitive field that does not separate schools by classification.
Gentry noted that this year marked his first as head coach, but explained that the team already had a good foundation. He also emphasized the growth and opportunities within the program, including college esports recruitment interest and facility upgrades provided through ESPN support.
With a senior-heavy roster, Frenship Esports will look to rebuild next season while expanding its offerings to include Marvel Rivals. Tryouts for the 2026–2027 teams will be held May 12–14.
